A brief outline of ITIS "G. Marconi"
ITIS "G. Marconi", named after the Italian inventor of the radio, is a state technical school that operates in three different areas of study: Electricity, Mechanics and Thermo-Technology.
It was founded 60 years ago and is still housed in the same premises, although often refurbished, that were then built.
The students enrol in our school at 14 years of age and leave 5 years later, holding a nation-wide recognised certificate of studies.
In the first 2 years they focus on common and basic disciplines, while in the final 3 years they concentrate mainly on the courses relevant to the specialization they have chosen (see tables).
We have approximately 1,300 students (300 of whom in the evening classes, attended by people who work during the day), 160 teachers and 57 administration staff, thus being the largest school in our province.
The school timetable consists of 36 hours, almost all confined to the morning, between 8:10 a.m. and 1:40 p.m.; some classes are held in the afternoon, as either ordinary or support teaching.
The scientific and technical subjects taught to our pupils are at a level not much lower than that required for a bachelor degree.
The final diploma issued to our students enables them to be employed in the industrial system at an intermediate position, where they are entitled to design technical equipment and make certain decisions and choices. They will be able to supervise groups of labourers and/or skilled workers and, in their turn, report to the main decision makers of their company.
Also, they may start a personal business, after a 2-year period of training in a technical firm and a final examination, and operate in the field of electrical, mechanical and thermical installations.
Alternatively, they may decide to continue their education, enrolling in whatever University faculty, usually through an admission examination. An average of 30% of our diploma holders do so, mainly in courses leading to an engineering degree.
